Pointing in Brick Masonry Construction.

POINTING:-

The material of mortar cement and sand, or lime and surkhi or kankar lime as specified shall be of standard specifications. The materials of mortar shall be measured with wooden measuring boxes according to the required proportions such as (1:2 or l:3) for cement sand mortar and (1:1) for the lime surkhi mortar kankar lime mortar and shall be mixed dry by turning 2 to 3 times. The for e is then added slowly and gradually and mixed the mortar thoroughly. 

Where possible, independent scaffolding shall be provided. Scaffolding shall be cheeked to make sure that it is suitable and safe.

Pointing, in building maintenance, the technique of repairing mortar joints between bricks or other masonry elements. When aging mortar joints crack and disintegrate, the defective mortar is removed by hand or power tool and replaced with fresh mortar, preferably of the same composition as the original.

Before pointing old brick work or new brick work in mud, the joints shall be racked out with a hock (not a hemmer) to a depth 12 mm. In case of new brick work or brick masonry in lime or cement mortar, joints shall be racked out as the work proceeds and before the mortar sets. All earth and mortar dust obtained from racking the joints shall he thoroughly washed off and the brick work watered for 24 hours. 

Mortar shall then be applied and joints fully filled and pressed by a steel edge and finished and extra mortar removed. After pointing the surface shall be kept wet for one week. 

Following are the usual types of pointing:

• Beaded pointing.
• Flush pointing.
• Recessed pointing.
• Rubbed or keyed or grooved pointing.
• Struck pointing.
• Tuck pointing.
• Vee – pointing.
• Weathered pointing.

Deep or struck pointing. 

The mortar shall be filled in the joints flush with the masonry or brick work with a pointing trowel and then pressed it with a proper pointing tool. Lining with a spike will not be tolerated.All lines shall be perfectly straight, truly horizontal or vertical and the mortar shall be so stiff that the pointing tool leave n clear-cut line, with no appearance of ragged edges. 

Flush Pointing.

For flush pointing, the mortar shall be filled and pressed into the joints with a pointing trowel, and finished off level with the edge of the bricks to give the smoothest possible appearance to the work. 

Raised Pointing. 

For raised pointing, the mortar after being filled and pressed into the joints, shall project about 3 mm from the face of the joint and shall be finished neatly in true alignment. 

General Precaution. 

The pointing must follow the actual joints and is net to represent false joints. The mortar shall not be spread over the edges and corners of the bricks but these are to be left clearly visible. After pointing, the face of the brick shall be cleared of all surplus mortar adhering to the face. No washing is to be done until the pointing has set.
